“That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, that they may arise and tell them to their children, that they should put their confidence in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments." - Psalm 78:6-7
The Mindset
While the bible does not command us to practice age specific ministries we use them as a chosen application to support the primary ministry of the church by obeying biblical commands that can not be easily accomplished in the larger context of the local church. They provide an extension of pastoral care (Heb 13:17), deeper accountability (Col 1:28-29), more intimate fellowship (John 13:34-35) and give opportunity for believers to utilize their gifts to serve the Body of Christ (Rom 12:1-8).
The Mandate
Ultimately, young adult ministry exists to Glorify God (Rom 11:36, 1 Cor 10:31: Col 3:17; Col 1:16) we do this by partnering with the church to:
- Know God (Col 3:-4)
- Grow in Godliness (1 Tim 4:15)
- Show God (Eph 5:1)
These areas are inextricably linked in the life of a believer and taken together provide an accurate summary of our mandate: To learn to think rightly about truth (Know God), grow in our sanctification and understanding of God (Grow in Godliness) and live a life that displays Christ in everything (show God). You cannot leave one of these areas out!
The Mission
The young adult ministry age group is a uniquely formative time in life. Our goal is to take advantage of the opportunity provided by this age to prepare these young adults for a lifetime of knowing, growing and showing God. As these young adults are establishing habits, commitments and convictions for their life we have the opportunity to come alongside them and provide biblical wisdom and instruction. Young adults are also in a unique time where they are leaving behind childhood and trying to figure out how they fit into the adult world. Another goal of young adult ministry is to train up the young adults (Col 1:28-29) to the point where they are equipped for, and serving in, the adult ministries of the church as they graduate from the ministry. In order to accomplish these goals there are five core components of young adult ministries:
1. Evangelism - Both inside the ministry through continual Gospel preaching as well as outside the ministry through evangelism (Matt 28:18-20).
2. Bible Teaching - By the time a young adult leaves the ministry they should know the Bible is:
- sufficient for them (2 Tim 3:16-17),
- understandable by them (Ps 119:130), and
- applicable in its entirety to them (2 Tim 3:16-17).
3. Relationships - The primary purpose of young adult ministry is to know God. All events, components, and relationships within the ministry should point believers in this direction. (Jer 9:23–24; Phil 3:7–11). That being said, relationships are essential to a believer's life and especially in this age group. With that in mind, by the time a young adult leaves the ministry they should have a biblical understanding of relationships with all age groups and both sexes.
4. Discipleship - Passages like Matt 28:18-20 and Titus 2:1-8 makes discipleship a clear priority for all believers. Young adult ministry is committed to initiating life on life discipleship relationships to teach, correct, model and love.
5. Fun - Young adult’s have a unique amount of time and energy to enjoy God’s gifts, young adult ministry should be fun (Ecc 11:9)!
